In winter 2022, we raised funds for 850 trees to be planted at the local secondary school, along the fences that separates the school from a busy road. This Miyawaki hedgerow revived and enriched the biodiversity of the school grounds. As well as supporting a new highly diverse ecosystem, the Miyawaki hedgerow was added to capture carbon with its close foliage, and to buffer pollution and noise from the surrounding streets. The first summer was challenging but after Dream for Trees and local volunteers stepped in, most of the saplings survived. It showed us the importance of aftercare – having helpers, access to the site and water are crucial in the first couple of years.
