St Donat’s Castle sits above the Vale of Glamorgan coast with views over the Bristol Channel. It is home to UWC Atlantic College, one of the founding schools of the United World Colleges movement, where around 350 students from more than 90 countries live and study together. The college is committed to Net Zero by 2040 and runs an on-campus organic farm.
Woodland creation provides inclusive opportunities for diverse communities to engage with nature. The UK’s Forest Commission research agency recognises that ‘working side by side to improve local spaces creates opportunities for conversation, cooperation and shared pride, helping to reduce isolation and strengthen neighbourhood ties’.
Dream for Trees and its trustees worked across a weekend alongside students and staff to plant the second mini-forest. This ran adjacent to an existing hedge which was already working as a nature corridor. These wildlife havens connect the fragmented landscapes of our predominantly agricultural rural landscape in the UK and the dense biodiversity of Miyawaki planting boosts existing habitats with refuge and sustenance.
